San Francisco Noir: The Photographs of Fred Lyons at the Leica Gallery

Fred Lyons has been photographing San Francisco for at least seven decades. A show of his works from the 40s and 50s at The Gallery at Leica Store SF exquisitely captures this bygone era with a collection of moody images, evoking both the almost-forgotten black & white images of Life Magazine (where he worked for decades) and the equally dark Film Noir of the period– think The Maltese Falcon or our favorite, The Lineup.

Like the films, Lyons’ dark, velvety images convey a feast that no longer exist; the show is only up through October 21.

More: Check out the NYTimes.com superb slideshow of Lyons’ work here, and don’t miss this video of Lyons reminiscing about the excitement of post-WWII San Francisco. Fred Lyons is represented by Peter Fetterman Gallery.
