The Agenda: Timber Cove 2.0 and Sunset's Idea House

Timber Cove Resort

Luxe meets lodge at the newly re-imagined Timber Cove resort on a quiet stretch of the Sonoma Coast between Bodega Bay and Sea Ranch. Inspired by classic Frank Lloyd Wright architecture, the retreat (beloved by anyone looking to unplug) preserved the historic stone, timber, and glass facade while turning inward to update the interiors. The 46 completely renovated rooms are contemporary in style and feature natural elements drawn from the surrounding picturesque setting. Gensler and L.A.-based The Novogratz stepped in to pump up the look, described by some as "modern hippie," with a mix of modern and retro pieces, including 1920s decor, tribal textiles, white fabrics, worn leather, and pops of preppy plaids. You might want to reserve yourself a weekend getaway stat before all the rooms are booked.

Book Signing

Dan Chavkin: Unseen Midcentury Desert Modern

If, like us, you're a midcentury modern fanatic, get yourself to L.A.'s A+D Museum this weekend for photographer Dan Chavkin's latest signing. His book is the culmination of an eight-year-long project, in which Chavkin sought out Palm Spring's more unassuming and off-the-beaten path midcentury modern buildings by such famous architects as William Cody and John Porter Clark, as well as other lesser-known designers. The result is a collection of desert classics, most of which are completely off-limits to the public. Voyeur mode on.

When: 2 - 4 p.m., Sun. 8/14

Where: Architecture and Design Museum, 900 E. Fourth St., Los Angeles

Installation

"Avalanches, Volcanoes, Asteroids, Floods"

With a title meant to upend tradition, AVAF turns the linear survey exhibition format on its head. The immersive installation of mixed media begs audience interaction, with printed rugs, wall coverings, and theatrical backdrops that encourage visitors to lay on the floor and stay awhile while rearranging exhibit elements and creating performances at their fancy. The AVAF acronym also references seminal video works that illustrate our collective anxiety around natural disasters, particularly relevant in earthquake, drought, and wildfire-prone California.

When: Sat. 8/13–Sun. 1/1/17

Where: Museum of Contemporary Art Santa Barbara, 653 Paseo Nuevo, Santa Barbara
