On The Waterfront: Mid-Century Modern Rentals in Tiburon Offer a Sailor's Haven

Until the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge, Tiburon was a sleepy weekend haven for prosperous San Franciscans, its hillsides dotted with handsome mansions, native oaks, and the occasional cow. Much of that changed after WWII and into the ‘60s when Tiburon (and its neighbor Sausalito) witnessed a building boom that included both single-family homes and multiple-unit dwellings, jolting what were once open meadows and small dairy farms into suburbia.

Fortunately lot of open meadow has been preserved since then, but down on the waterfront, we’ve always been fans of The Cove at Tiburon, a complex of 1, 2 and 3-bedroom apartments in the now-classic Post & Beam style with pitched roofs and built directly on Richardson Bay– the sort of place Joe Eichler might have built, with design details very much like his contemporaneous development projects in Lucas Valley.

In one of the first big Marin County transactions, Maximus Real Estate Partners bought the 284-unit property in 2013 and immediately undertook a long and comprehensive renovation, giving the units a fresh look with new kitchens and baths while retaining their Mid-Century vibe.

Change Your Life: Elevate your commute by taking the ferry from Tiburon to the Ferry Building. Richardson Bay is an important stop on the Pacific Flyway, so you can improve your bird-watching skills and beef up your life list. On the edge of one of the West Coast's great sport sailing areas, sheltered boat slips are available to tenants in the complex’s private, sheltered marina. Or go small and get a kayak. Start collecting Mid-Century furniture again.

More: 1-bedroom units start at $3500, with the grander 3-bedroom units on the upper floors approaching $8500 a month. All the units have water views, plus a newly-renovated clubhouse (below) just opened for residents, part of the expanding amenities program.
